Popkey

The worlds first GIF keyboard

00

problem

Text alone couldn't capture the nuance, humor, and emotion people wanted to share. Sending GIFs was clunky, slow, and hidden behind copy-paste hacks. Messaging desperately needed a more expressive language.

solution

I designed and launched PopKey, the first GIF keyboard for iOS 8, bringing reaction GIFs directly into the keyboard for instant use. With a polished UX, intuitive search, and seamless sharing, PopKey made sending a GIF as natural as sending an emoji—and set the blueprint for an entire category.

PopKey wasn't just an app, it was a movement. Within months it grew to over one million users, became a viral cultural phenomenon, and was hailed by TechCrunch as "the GIF keyboard you should be using." Major brands including Nike, Starbucks, and Sony partnered with us to tap into this new communication format. PopKey redefined how people express themselves in messages and cemented itself as the original GIF keyboard that changed digital conversations forever.

When PopKey launched, it captured headlines everywhere. The press celebrated it as the first iOS GIF keyboard worth using — praised for its polish, speed, and the simple magic of sending a reaction GIF without breaking the flow of conversation. For users, it felt like a revolution: a new visual language dropped directly into their fingertips.

I designed PopKey from the ground up, pioneering the very idea of a GIF keyboard. By making GIFs as easy to send as emojis, PopKey unlocked a new dimension of digital expression — playful, human, and deeply cultural. The experience was intuitive and delightful, which quickly translated into explosive adoption and industry attention.

In just months, PopKey was downloaded by over a million users and went on to secure partnerships with some of the world's most recognizable brands, including Nike, Starbucks, and Sony. More than an app, PopKey became a cultural phenomenon — proof that thoughtful design can change the way people communicate and even carve out entirely new categories of digital behavior.
